THE CHALLENGE

Urban Prep Academies was founded by Tim King and a group of African-American education, business and civic leaders who wanted to improve the educational opportunities available to urban boys. As Urban Prep Academies prepared to submit its application for charter approval in 2005, JT was retained to manage media relations before, during and after the school’s review, and eventual approval, by the Chicago Board of Education as part of its Renaissance 2010 program.

THE APPROACH

  • More than 1,000 guests at a public convocation ceremony, featuring a keynote speech by Chicago Board of Education President Rufus Williams.
  • Several dozen media mentions, including live interviews on CNN and MSNBC as well as local stories by the Chicago Tribune, WMAQ-TV (NBC), and WLS-TV (ABC).
  • Provided a memorable graduation ceremony for a combined total of more than 10,000 guests at the 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015 commencement ceremonies.

THE RESULTS

  • JT media outreach has resulted in coverage on the Today Show and Good Morning America, a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune, a Chicago Public Radio segment, Chicago Sun-Times article, a WMAQ-TV (NBC) segment, morning show segments on FOX News, a story in the Christian Science Monitor, an Associated Press article, features on WTTW-TV’s public affairs program “Chicago Tonight” and WVON-AM, among others. The students were also featured on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer’s “Person of the Week,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” as well as People Magazine
  • The JT events team provided a memorable graduation ceremony for a combined total of more than 10,000 guests at the 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 commencement ceremonies.
  • In 2011, JT coordinated event logistics for the special assembly with then-Mayor Richard M. Daley and led media outreach efforts that resulted in live interviews on CNN and MSNBC as well as local stories by the Chicago Tribune, WMAQ-TV (NBC), WFLD-TV (FOX), WLS-TV (ABC), WBBM-TV (CBS), WGN-TV and WLS-AM.
  • JT hosted more than 1,000 guests at a public convocation ceremony, featuring a keynote speech by Chicago Board of Education President Rufus Williams.
