In six short weeks, JT worked closely with the City of Chicago and World Business Chicago to plan and implement the December 5, 2017 North American Climate Summit with mayors and senior leaders from Canada, Mexico, France and Africa. More than 60 mayors from around the world signed the Chicago Climate Charter at the Summit, committing their cities to aggressive climate action plans over the next two years. The Summit demonstrated Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s and the City of Chicago’s international leadership on climate change and concluded with remarks by President Obama.
With more than 130 mayors and senior city leaders attending, JT served as their main point of contact, overseeing the general registration process for more than 400 guests and serving as travel agent to the mayors, coordinating flights. JT also created and managed a transportation plan that included the use of fuel-efficient buses and changing transportation needs. In addition, we developed the run of show and stage managed the Summit, including the signing of the Charter.
In addition to coordinating event logistics for the Summit, JT managed all press logistics, including a press room, multiple news conferences, satellite feeds, a press credentialing process and a very crowded media riser. JT developed the list used to pitch media and provided outreach support in advance. To help ensure each mayor was prepared to promote his or her participation in the Summit, JT developed a communications toolkit with template language to be used at the local level and communicated directly with staff in each mayor’s office.
Our digital team was onsite to develop content that was used on official Summit channels. In advance of the event, the team created a digital toolkit that was included in the communications toolkit sent to Mayor’s offices. Participating mayors joined the online conversation by sharing the official graphics and posting with the Summit hashtag, which was trending on Twitter all day in Chicago.

Knight Foundation announced a renewed commitment to its national replication of On the Table – a civic engagement initiative developed by The Chicago Community Trust in 2014.
