JT Partners with G-PAC to 'Fix the FOID'
JT was proud to team up with the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention PAC (G-PAC) to support the Fix the FOID Act, new legislation with a goal of addressing loopholes in the existing gun licensing system in Illinois.
Under current Illinois law, individuals seeking to buy a gun must first obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card from the Department of State Police. The tragic shooting at Henry Pratt Company in Aurora on February 15, 2019 brought to light dangerous gaps in the state law that allowed the shooter to have easy access to guns despite a previous felony conviction.
The Fix the FOID Act would address many of these gaps, strengthen the FOID system and help ensure that people with a violent criminal history, who are prohibited from gun possession, cannot evade the law and arm themselves.
As the bill made its way towards the Illinois legislature, JT was brought in with only four weeks until the end of session to generate media attention and mobilize an existing coalition around this critical legislation.
Through targeted phone and email outreach, JT mobilized supporters to rally in Springfield in support of the bill. The rally captured the attention of media across the state, and over the course of the month the Fix the FOID Act was covered in more than 80 news stories across print, TV and radio news outlets. High-profile coverage included an in-depth investigation into the issue by the Chicago Tribune and two editorials by the Chicago Sun-Times.
JT was proud to see the Fix the FOID Act celebrate a huge victory in the House of Representatives, and we’re hopeful it will move through the Senate in the future.
